Mia stared at the TV. She was so sick of watching it, but she had little else to do. Her days were spent eating, napping, watching TV, and occasionally reading a book. Her family members would come in and out, trying in vain to keep her occupied. But nothing was going to take her mind off the fact that her baby could be in danger if she did the wrong thing.

Her natural personality wanted her to get out of bed, run down the stairs, greet guests, and cook a good meal. She felt like a terrible hostess for having to stay in bed like this.

"How's my beautiful wife?" Travis asked as he breezed through the door. He came to check on her several times a day, running back-and-forth across Carter's Hollow in his truck. He’d spend an hour or two at the adventure center, helping with guests, and then he would come back to check on her. Then he would go back and work on the reality show, and then he would come back and check on her again.

She knew he had to be exhausted. But he never said a word. He didn't complain. He always came through the door with a smile on his face. She knew he was tired because at the end of the day, he could barely keep his eyes open at dinner, and he was completely passed out by eight o'clock. Very different from the night owl of a husband, as she had always known.

"I'm doing fine. Just lying around like the big water buffalo I am."

He tilted his head and squinted his eyes. "I'm just curious, but why not a regular buffalo? Why add the water?"

She glared at him. "The proper answer was, ‘no honey, you don't look like any kind of buffalo’.”

He held up his hands. "Don't get mad. It was just a question. So, what have you been up to today?" He sat on the edge of the bed and rubbed one of her feet.

"Well, let's see. First, I ate the breakfast Kate brought to me. I have to teach her how to make a meal because I'm not sure what that was. Then, I tried to read a book, but I fell asleep. Then it was lunchtime. Kate brought me what I think was a bowl of chili, but it had peas in it. Again, we need to have a talk."

Travis couldn't keep a straight face. "You don't think she's feeding that stuff to the guests, do you?"

"I'm sure she is. These people will never want to come back again."

"I'll remind her where the recipe book is. What else have you been doing?"

"I watched some trashy court TV shows. A woman was suing her mother for accidentally peeing on her sofa. It was so enthralling."

Again, Travis started laughing. "I'm sorry. I know you'd rather be doing just about anything else than laying in this bed."

"I know it's what I have to do right now for the baby, but I swear every single minute feels like it's an hour.
